About the theatre workshop

Learn how to creative ‘trick’ or ‘levitation’ photography at our unique workshop set in a semi-abandoned theatre.

I run a one-day photography workshop at the Royal Hippodrome theatre in Eastbourne. Eastbourne is 1 hour from London by car/train. The workshop offers a group of 8 participants the chance to shoot in a quirky location whilst being shown a host of techniques to achieve special effects such as trick compositing, HDR (high dynamic range), and other ways to suitably use the space to create dynamic portraits, in a venue you would rarely otherwise be able to use in this way.

How is the day organised?

Here’s a quick overview: at 9am we meet in the theatre for a welcome, with tea, coffee, and croissants. I do a brief presentation introducing the day’s aims and concepts, talking about my own relevant images.  You will go for a quick theatre tour whilst I set up my demo on the stage, and by 10am I will be shooting, to demonstrate set-ups in both of the two shooting areas.

The group will split into two and each roam the theatre, one round the stage and auditorium area, and the other in the more derelict backstage rooms, before swapping over. Everyone gets a chance to shoot individually with each model, with as much input and guidance as you need.

After a lunch break we re-adjourn for a full afternoon of editing. I demonstrate my own process live on the projector, following step-by-step if you wish, and then I help everyone with their own.

All students also get a movie tutorial of a finished workshop pic, sent to you after the workshop, to aid your editing and process even after the day is over.

____

What is the cost?

The price is £199 per person.

____

How many places are there?

There are 8 places.

____

What level of skill do I need to have?

You need to be able to use your DSLR fairly confidently, so that you can shoot without needing help, but you don’t need to be an expert. You can be a beginner at Photoshop, though the editing session will move at a fairly fast pace so we’ve found that beginners will need to consult my post-workshop editing movie to recall certain parts of the process that I used for the image in question.

____

What do I need to bring?

Your DSLR camera, and a laptop loaded with Photoshop. If you don’t have the latter, ask me, as I have one spare. If you wish to just watch me edit, then you don’t need to bring one.
