Growing pains

Taken in the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, Brighton.

Yonks ago (last October, to be precise), I ventured into my first abandoned building, Hellingly Mental Asylum in East Sussex. Sharing the images on Flickr, and then going to visit more abandoned places with partner Matthew (you can see my abandoned set here) I was eager to also write up a blog post that somehow got lost in draft.

So I decided to write up my thoughts on the various abandoned buildings we have adventured into, including Hellingly, and the ones since then, including another mental hospital and a girls’ school. I shall it post this week (I also plan to create a Blurb book this summer themed on my shoots in abandoned places).

Meanwhile, here are some images we took just this weekend during our latest escapade, a series taken in a children’s ward in the Brighton hospital, which I have entitled ‘Growing pains’:

When seeing the photos on Flickr and then the link to the blog post, I got my hopes up for more of your reflections on the locations. Alas, twas not to be. The pretty photos are nice bit of placation, however.

Thanks for sharing the additional photos. (Or will they all make it to Flickr?)

These abandoned buildings are amazing. Your shots are perhaps not as striking as those at Helingley- is your underwear doubling up as swimwear? – but the aquatic room and the text has great potential for the full Miss Aniela treatment :-)

You might want to check out the work of Elle Dunn, aka Nurse Payne on Flickr, she does some very good self portraits in abandoned buildings.

The jump shot works much better as a composition than the others and I’m sure it would be popular on flickr if you chose to post it there. It might not have the overwrought “growing pains” concept, but it removes the problem of that huge gap between the text and the model which made the other shots seem really disjointed and unbalanced.
While it’s obvious that you weren’t aiming for a harmonious composition, I think you need to smooth off the rough edges if you want to be popular/commercial.

      smooth nothing for fuck sake.

Most sentences that consist of ” you need to _________ if you want to be popular” should be ignored vehemently.

You have an innate talent for choosing locations which are interesting and this is no exception. Your photos are superb and well chosen and edited. And you give endless enjoyment to many. Thank you.
