Launch of Quarter to Five Artists

Last Friday was the launch of our group exhibition at the Fishing Quarter Gallery on Brighton seafront. My work is hanging alongside the work of four other artists: Peter Gosbee, Ruth Schmidt, Nikki Black, and Jessica Jordan.

Above: image of my part of the exhibition (this is a composite of six images stitched together using Photomerge in Photoshop!)

The launch went well given the circumstances (being at the same time as an England game!) and for me it felt great to be collaborating with 4 other artists, as I am mostly used to solo shows (which are good but it’s nice to share it with others). I lost count of how many times I was asked how I did ‘The smothering’ so I half wished I didn’t put it up ;-)

The exhib is on till Tuesday.

Thanks to Nikki Black for inviting me to be part of the exhibition, and for doing so well to organise the show and the launch night. Thank you to the other artists, in particular Ruth Schmidt, for overseeing the exhibition every day and for being a big part of the organisation also.

Big thanks to Mr Wolfy for hanging all my pictures. Not quite sure how I would have handled it without him and his toolkit. Also, thanks to him lending me his bike (and rucksack) to cycle down from Hove to and from the gallery – what a great idea that was!

Special thanks to Juliet Greig for taking pictures of the launch, of all launch night pics below.

Big thanks to SPECTRUM in Hove for sponsoring my portion of the exhibition. All my prints on display were produced by Spectrum, most being mounted onto aluminium for an impressive clean borderless result. You can print your images professionally at Spectrum from anywhere using their nifty online ordering system.

Above and below: generic snaps you take at this kind of event (thanks to Ju Greig of course)

Above and below: some cool pics Juliet Greig took at the end of the night. She had the idea of standing by the boat, I think the results were very interesting!

Popped in just before closing time last Saturday to see the show. I really like seeing different media/artists in the same exhibition; the hats are bonkers! I guess it’s hard to choose what to put up but I was surprised that you didn’t show some of the derelict building/abandoned work. But great work, and good to see your stuff in the context of a gallery – much better than seeing it on the small screen…

Hello! Quick answer to that – I haven’t printed any of that new stuff yet, not big for exhibiting anyway, mainly due to cost: cost of printing, cost of framing (extortionate if you want quality presentation!) and not least, the hassle of storing them too! The 6 prints you saw at the exhibition are part of my stock of about 17 framed prints from my exhibitions of last year, I sold a couple, but the rest are a bit of a storage challenge especially as I have just recently demoted myself to one tiny London room. I planned to use this exhibition as an opportunity to further showcase these pre-existing prints before producing new millstones ;-)

For my next exhibition I’m excited about the prospect of printing my new stuff, for which I’ll have to swallow the costs of producing, framing and storing (unless I can get some kind of grant or help!) The costs of producing these prints was brought down by sponsorship from Spectrum in Hove, so I’d hope to continue a similar relationship for future shows. Obviously the best thing that can happen is to sell these prints, so spread the word ;-)

If you happen to be in Chicago :-) you’ll be able to see some new stuff (along with older stuff) in an exhibition I’m announcing shortly…
